Independence - Robert Raper

In 1983, I was living in Rock Springs, Wyoming and working as a BLM District
Fire and Aviation Manager. One of the employees that I worked with had a hot air
balloon (Raven) and would periodically fly in the summer mornings. For years I
enjoyed seeing this balloon in the air early in the morning and came to the
conclusion that it must be fun. On occasion, I would chase the balloon and enjoy
seeing the smiles and excitement surrounding the operation.
Over time, and through my travels at work, I would have the opportunity to
attend various ballooning events at towns that I would be visiting, watching the
excitement of mass ascension and the parties that followed. As an aviation
manager, I always wondered what it would be like to pilot a balloon.
In 1992, I had the opportunity to attend the Albuquerque event as a spectator
and I was without words to describe of all the different colors and shapes.
Without doubt, this was something that I would really like to do. For 20 years
my job placed me in small aircraft and helicopters and I could only imagine how
wonderful it would be to own and fly a balloon.
Finally, in 1995, I noticed a new balloon piloted by an Aerostar Balloon
dealer and commercial operator, in the skies of Rock Springs and I finally had
my opportunity to learn how to buy and fly a balloon. In April of 1996, I
received my commercial pilots certificate. In 1998 I moved to North Bend,
Oregon.
I have flown nearly 500 flights, averaging 12 balloon events in eight states
annually, since I received my FAA pilots certificate. I own and fly two balloons
(90,000 and 105,000 cubic feet). I enjoy chasing or flying a balloon equally.
